What is Metro Ethernet?

The term ‘Metro Ethernet’ refers to the use of Ethernet technology for internet and intranet connections in a metropolitan area. The Ethernet technology supports high bandwidths and fast data transfer speeds. This is achieved by the Ethernet stations communicating by the transfer of individual data blocks or packets. Most common in residential areas and corporations, Ethernet networks are affordable and easy to install within the existing network. Metro Ethernet connections not only offer high speed connectivity, but also offer secure data transfers on the network. For corporations and government agencies the network security is of prime importance and that is why an increasing number of corporation and government agencies in metropolitan cities have installed an Ethernet connection for their internet plans.

Metro Ethernet is one of the fastest possible internet connections existing currently, but it faces the issues of reliability and scalability.

Metro Ethernet Over Fiber

Metro Ethernet dates back to 1981 when IEEE released the 802.3 specifications. Of course, over the years those standards were improved and perfected. To begin with Ethernet connections were laid down using thicknet coaxial wiring, which was stiff and rigid to handle. Thus, it lacked flexibility. Later came thinnet wiring that made it flexible and improved the data transfer speeds. After that came the twisted-pair wiring that increased the data transfer speeds even more. The only issue with the twisted-pair wiring was that it had magnetic interference and there were cross-talk issues with it.

These issues were resolved by the union of Metro Ethernet connection with the fiber optic technology called unshielded twisted-pair wiring. This Metro Ethernet over fiber technology enabled a consistent speed of up to 10 Gbps through the internet connection with undistorted data transfers. This was almost one hundred times faster than the old Metro Ethernet connection that was not on fiber optics.

The only problem is that it is very expensive to install Ethernet over fiber optics. That is why organizations that have a high traffic of data transfers can afford to install Ethernet over fiber internet technology. Metro Ethernet over fiber internet technology offers such high data transfer speeds that they are impossible to achieve from your regular internet plans of broadband connections. Unfortunately, it can not be installed without a fiber optic infrastructure.

The fiber optic infrastructure has been installed in select geographical areas across the world and is still not widely available. That is why the Metro Ethernet over fiber connection is also available in a select number of geographical areas across the world. The good news is that the advantages of this technology are immense and governments all over the world are realizing this. That is why the installation of fiber optics infrastructure is being commissioned by governments across the world.

Benefits of Metro Ethernet Over Fiber

A Metro Ethernet over fiber connection can address many different needs of an organization ranging from IP VPN Access, Dedicated Internet Access and layer 2/3 networking. It is one of the most effective ways of connecting LANs within a specific metropolitan area and offering high data transfer speeds all the while.

Metro Ethernet over fiber helps organizations connect their remote offices to all the required data sources. All this is done in such a manner that it feels as if everything is available right at the company site. This means that employees can use fast transmission of data from offsite locations. All the network servers can be centralized at the company’s data center to ease data storage and backup. For organizations this makes it easier to consolidate their storage systems.

It is not only reliable, but also has the agility to support the organization in their future network designs. All this can be done over an area spanning thousands of miles or even more without their being any effect on the speed.

Conclusion

The pure Ethernet connection is inexpensive but not so reliable and faces scalability issues as well. Combine it with fiber optic technology and you have a fast connection that is highly scalable, albeit expensive but cost-effective for large organizations. A broadband connection installed via cable, satellite or wireless methods can not even come close to offering the same speed that an Ethernet over fiber connection can. Broadband connections that users had initially greatly appreciated are nothing when it comes to the Metro Ethernet over fiber connection.
